Why I became a Nutritionist

I have always had a fascination with the human body. My curiosity was heightened when, 9 months after giving birth to my daughter, I became very ill. My weight plummeted, as did my energy levels and motivation. I felt drained in every sense, even from walking up the stairs. The tiredness from countless sleepless nights as a new mother felt insignificant to the exhaustion I was now experiencing.

I was soon diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism. My body was producing more thyroid hormone than it required and my metabolism had sped up to an alarming rate. I was given medication to keep it under control and was told that if my thyroid didn’t return to normal, I would need an operation to destroy part of my thyroid gland and take medication every day for the rest of my life. This took me right back to my 18 year old self, walking out of the GP surgery with a prescription of Prozac because I was feeling a bit down. 13 years later I knew that taking medication this time may actually save my life. However, my gut feeling told me this wasn’t the solution. Taking matters into my own hands, I embarked on a complete diet and lifestyle overhaul. To the surprise of my doctor, within 3 months, my thyroid hormones had, unusually, returned to a normal level. I returned to a healthy weight and I felt happier and more energetic than ever.

From this moment I knew I wanted to study nutrition. I discovered first-hand the power of food on my physical and mental health. I have seen this time and time again during my 3 years of training at the College of Naturopathic Medicine in London, from which I graduated with distinction in 2019.

My passion to help others find their way to optimal health through food and lifestyle is now stronger than ever. I believe that if we have the education around how food impacts our physiology, we will be more equipped to make the right individual choices for us. Furthermore, food is medicine and can heal, even the most complicated of medical conditions.
